Per Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice, Tomas Nosek will be out for ”weeks, not days” with an upper-body injury.
He left in the first period of the second game of Florida’s preseason-opening doubleheader after getting tripped into the boards. He was helped off the ice and into the locker room after sliding into the boards at full speed.
“It’s going to take a few days to know the extent of this injury,” Maurice said. “It depends on how fast he heals. But this is not going to be short term. So we’re weeks not days from where we’re at right now.”
Maurice said there have been no signs of a concussion so far since Nosek left the game on Sunday.
“It’s more than just the first 20 minutes where we say concussion,” Maurice said. “A lot of times , we won’t for 48 hours. We’re waiting for signs. There weren’t any, still aren’t, so we’re confident.”
Nosek was the favorite to center Florida’s fourth line, starting out training camp taking reps on a line between Jesper Boqvist and A.J. Greer.
He scored two goals and six points in 36 games for the New Jersey Devils last season before joining the Panthers in free agency this offseason.
Additionally, Mackie Samoskevich did not skate with either group during Tuesday’s practice.
He is dealing with what Maurice called a “minor” upper-body injury that he suffered just before training camp started.
Samoskevich was originally supposed to re-join the team as a full participant in practice after skating by himself during the team’s off day on Monday, but had a “flare up,” per Maurice.
“It didn’t get worse, we just want to get him cleaned up,” Maurice said. “I don’t have him in the game tomorrow. My expectation is that he practices towards the weekend Friday ro Saturday.”
Fellow rookie Justin Sourdif left Tuesday’s practice early after sliding into the boards/.
He was slow to get up, but he did get up and skate off on his own while holding his face. He did not return to practice.
“He’s getting looked at right now,” Maurice said. “First thought when you looked at it was maybe he went in head first. There isn’t a sign now that he’s got a concussion, he just cut his face up a little bit and then he’s got some upper body stiffness. So, that’ll be tomorrow. We’ll figure out how he is.”
