SUNRISE, Fla. — Carter Verhaeghe scored a hat trick and the Florida Panthers defeated the New York Islanders 6-3 on Sunday night.
After giving up three goals to start the second period, the Panthers roared back with a pair of goals from Evan Rodrigues and Sam Reinhart late in the frame to take the lead and never looked pack.
Verhaeghe completed the hat trick with a one-timer off of a feed from Matthew Tkachuk 10:41 into the third period to put Florida up by two goals after scoring twice in the first period.
Tkachuk scored the empty-net goal to seal it with 1:39 to go.
Spencer Knight stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced on Sunday night, putting together his seventh start with a .900 SV% or higher in his past eight starts.
